Natural Rosacea Treatment with Essential Oils and Diet

Can you really use essential oils and diet as a natural Rosacea treatment?

When I was younger, I thought my Rosacea was adult acne. I tried every acne product out there, and my skin became progressively drier and increasingly red.

Then my dermatologist diagnosed me with Rosacea. This is when I started researching rather than throwing things on my face!

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a skin condition that makes your face look red, feel dry, and react sensitively. It is usually accompanied by breakouts, blackheads, frequent blushing, and spider veins near the skin’s surface.

Though its cause is unknown, Rosacea is known to be hereditary, especially in people of Celtic descent. Rosacea affects both men and women, but more women are affected than men. Rosacea symptoms usually develop between ages 30 to 50.

When you have Rosacea, you should seek the advice of your dermatologist before starting any new skin care routine.

Rosacea Treatment

In Western medicine, Rosacea is treated with antibiotic creams. Symptoms return when the medication is stopped. This kind of temporary solution isn’t ideal because prolonged usage of antibiotic creams can lead to other complications, as well as ceasing to be effective.

I’m glad that natural Rosacea treatments are more accepted and available today. Many people would rather see if this type of solution can work before resorting to prescription medications with side effects. Everyone’s skin is different. This is why there isn’t one Rosacea treatment that works for everyone.

Essential Oils for Rosacea

Organic therapeutic-grade essential oils are a good choice as a natural remedy for Rosacea. Essential oils are used with carrier oils such as jojoba or almond oil to dilute the essential oil because they can be very potent.

Essential oils that are beneficial for natural rosacea treatment are:

  • lavender
  • tea tree oil
  • chamomile
  • sandalwood
  • frankincense
  • helichrysum
  • cedar wood

Why Buy Organic Essential Oils

Many of these essential oils can be pricey, especially when produced organically. My research has shown that it is still worthwhile to buy organic essential oils.

Residues from the processing are common contaminants in commercial essential oils. These oils are highly concentrated, so choose the purest form that you can afford.

When available, choose oils that are extracted with carbon dioxide to avoid pesticide and petrochemical residues. Residues left over from processing essential oils have the potential to worsen your skin’s condition.

Rosacea B-Vitamin Deficiency

Riboflavin is a B-Vitamin (B2) whose deficiency, either caused by diet or poor absorption, has been associated with rosacea. Increasing foods rich in riboflavin can help rosacea symptoms if they are included consistently in your diet.

Natural sources of vitamin B2 are nuts, fish, green leafy vegetables, legumes, pro-biotic yogurt & whole grains.

Rosacea Diet

Individual reaction patterns vary greatly in Rosacea so you may want to keep a food diary to discover your Rosacea triggers. If you suffer from Rosacea, foods that may irritate your condition are:

  • spicy foods
  • temperature hot foods
  • alcohol
  • coffee
  • chocolate
  • dairy
  • eggplant
  • tomatoes
  • citrus fruit
  • peas
  • lima beans

Make sure your diet includes either leafy green vegetables or fresh fruits at every meal, or at least as much as you can. Smoothies are a great way to incorporate fresh fruits and vegetables into your diet, especially when you don’t want to eat salad at every meal!

Keeping your skin hydrated from the inside by drinking water instead of tea or soda will help with dry skin. Be sure to keep skin moisturized on the outside with an organic moisturizer, like Herbe Sois Calming Moisturizer.

Lastly, avoid sun exposure by wearing a hat or a visor during the day. UV radiation makes the redness associated with rosacea worse. This will keep you from developing dark spots on your skin as well!
