How to Choose an Eye Cream

One topic that we get asked about frequently is, what eye cream do you recommend?

Here’s my answer. I don’t have a favorite eye cream, and the reason for that is I haven’t found one cream that has everything I’m looking for. This is perhaps the same situation I was in 5 years ago when I was looking for a good moisturizer for rosacea.

I’ll will let you know what I look for in an eye cream, and let you decide which ingredients are most important to you.

To start off with, a good eye cream should be organic and free of parabens, as well as other potentially hazardous chemicals.

This goes for any personal product that I use. The next 5 items you can pick and choose as you like:

  • Caffeine: helps to constrict superficial blood vessels to decrease darkness and puffiness. You can see it decrease puffiness within 10 minutes if the concentration in the cream is high enough.
  • Hyaluronic Acid: For plump skin cells nothing beats hyaluronic acid, which draws moisture from the air and holds up to 1,000 times its weight in water. It is excellent for reducing fine lines and keeping the skin soft, and hydrated.
  • Retinol: A vitamin A derivative, retinol stimulates cell turnover and collagen production, helping to strengthen skin and reduce complexion imperfections like sun spots and fine lines. Retinoids are anti-oxidants, and they are available as a prescription and in non-prescription eye creams.

The concentration of retinoid in your product is not available for non-prescription creams, which tend to contain less than a prescription. This is why I tend to recommend a prescription retinoid for the whole face.

Retinoids can cause side effects if used too often or in too high of a concentration, causing redness and peeling for several weeks upon starting the regimen. Keep this in mind if you are prone to sensitive skin, but also know that some people with rosacea have also been able to tolerate retinoids to improve their acne.

  • Silk peptides: Super-sensitive skin types might prefer an eye cream with peptides instead of a retinol. Like retinol, silk peptides also stimulate collagen and elastin production, but are gentler on the skin.
  • Vitamins C: Besides vitamin A (in the form of topical retinol), vitamins C is also a good anti-aging ingredient. Vitamin C aids in collagen production and skin elasticity.

Both men and women experience puffy eyes and dark circles, and and increasing number of men are starting to use a cream for under their eyes.

Personally, I use Herbe Sois Calming Moisturizer around my eyes because it contains Hyaluronic acid and Silk peptides, which are beneficial for keeping lines and signs of aging at bay for the whole face, as well as the eyes. If my eyes are puffy, I keep an eye pillow in the freezer and lay down with that for  5-10 minutes in the morning to constrict the blood vessels as caffeine would.

My hope is that soon at Organic Radiance Skincare, we will be able to reinvest income into researching and developing the ultimate organic eye cream!
