I spent years in biotechnology working on the next generation of Botox at Allergan. I know exactly how that molecule works. It blocks acetylcholine release at the neuromuscular junction, so the muscle stops contracting. It does not kill a nerve, and it does not make a cell younger. It silences a signal.
That is a useful thing for some people. It is also, to me, the perfect illustration of what the word “anti-aging” actually means. Anti implies we are fighting something. You cannot fight a natural process, and I have stopped trying.
I have age spots along my jawline. I am a scuba diver, and I spend a week at a time in the water. Those spots are the receipt for a life I am glad I got to live.
Functional skin aging is the approach of supporting your skin’s biological performance across your whole life, rather than correcting or erasing visible signs of age. It focuses on barrier integrity, steady renewal, and reducing cumulative damage. Two people the same age can have similar lines and completely different skin function.
Anti-aging asks how to make skin look younger. Functional aging asks whether skin is still doing its job.

I want our culture to accept that the signs of a life lived can make us more beautiful, not less. That is not a slogan. It changes what you buy and how often you use it.
Your skin is your body’s first line of defense. It keeps out dirt, pollution, bacteria, and viruses. Without it working properly, you would be getting sick constantly.
This is why barrier integrity is personal for me. The ocean is extremely drying. When I am diving for a week, I need my skin to protect me, not just photograph well. That is also why I do not over-exfoliate to the point of sun sensitivity. A stripped barrier is a barrier that cannot do its job.
Research supports treating skin as more than a surface. A 2025 review in Nature Aging described skin as a window into whole-body biological aging, with skin processes and systemic aging influencing each other in both directions.<sup>[1]</sup>
When we are young, collagen and elastin production and the cellular repair systems all work well. As we get older, several things shift at the functional level.
Skin thins, dries out, and the repair machinery becomes less efficient. Research on aged skin shows compromised barrier function, lower stratum corneum hydration, and a higher skin surface pH.<sup>[2]</sup> The higher pH matters because the enzymes that build barrier lipids work best in an acidic environment. Weak barrier leads to weaker barrier.
I call them zombie cells. Senescent cells stop dividing but resist apoptosis, which is programmed cell death. They do not die. They linger, and they secrete inflammatory signals that recruit immune cells.
When the body’s clearance of these cells falls behind, the result is chronic low-grade inflammation, sometimes called inflammaging. Researchers describe this secretion pattern as the senescence-associated secretory phenotype, and it both degrades the surrounding matrix and drives local inflammation.<sup>[3]</sup>
One aside that fascinates me as a biologist: cancer cells evade both checkpoints, apoptosis and senescence. That is how they keep dividing unchecked. Senescence is a safety brake that comes with a cost.
The energy factories in your cells produce less over time. Less cellular energy means less fuel available for repair. Mitochondrial dysfunction is one of the recognized hallmarks of skin aging.<sup>[4]</sup>
Your cells have two cleanup systems, the proteasome and autophagy. Both slow with age. Scientists call this loss of proteostasis, and it is another recognized hallmark of skin aging.<sup>[4]</sup> In plain terms, your skin’s quality control department gets understaffed, so old worn-out proteins stick around instead of being replaced.
The goal here is to support the system, not to fight a number on a calendar.

People say rosacea always gets worse with age. There is more to it than that.
I have had rosacea since my late twenties, and I was diagnosed around thirty. For years it decided things for me that it had no business deciding. In big meetings I sometimes held back because I could feel the flush rising and I did not want my skin to get more attention than my work. That is not how I live now, and getting there is a large part of why this company exists.
Here is the accurate version of what happens over time.
If you already have rosacea, the skin tends to change in two ways at once. Visible blood vessels increase, and skin gets thinner and more translucent. Those two things together make redness more noticeable.
If you have not developed rosacea by midlife, you are actually less likely to develop it going forward.
So the blanket statement is wrong in both directions. Some things do change, and the risk of new onset does not simply climb with age.
Expert consensus supports a more individual view. The global ROSacea COnsensus panel recommended moving away from fixed subtypes toward a phenotype-based approach, because individual features span multiple categories.<sup>[5]</sup> The panel identified persistent centrofacial redness with periodic intensification, and phymatous changes, as independently diagnostic. Flushing, visible vessels, inflammatory lesions, and ocular symptoms were not considered diagnostic on their own.<sup>[5]</sup>
Current understanding of what drives rosacea centers on three interacting systems: barrier and permeability dysfunction, immune dysregulation, and neurovascular dysregulation.<sup>[6]</sup>
Read that list again. Barrier. Immune response. Vascular regulation. Those are all function words.
From a functional standpoint, symptom progression tracks with trigger exposure and inflammation. Those are things you can influence. It is not a fixed sentence that reads “this will get worse as I get older.”

Topicals support your skin’s function and appearance. They do not rewrite your biology.
Before reaching for strong acids or anything intense, repair the barrier. Aggressive actives on a compromised barrier tend to flush sensitive skin and set you backward.
Repairing the barrier first brings inflammation down. Then actives are better tolerated and better absorbed, because there is less noise in the background. This sequence is not the gentle option. It is the effective one.
Barrier-supporting ingredients earn their place here. Niacinamide, which is vitamin B3, increases ceramide production in skin cells by upregulating a key enzyme in lipid synthesis. Applied topically, it has been shown to raise ceramide and free fatty acid levels in the outer skin layer and reduce water loss in dry skin.<sup>[7]</sup>
Retinols are a vitamin A derivative. They support cellular turnover and can improve the appearance of fine lines, age spots, and texture. They are also intense even on typical skin, and they are frequently too much for rosacea-prone skin. I have tried them, and they made my face very red.
If you want to try one, go slow, use a low concentration, and buffer it with moisturizer. Talk to your dermatologist first if you have a diagnosed condition.
Vitamin C works with your skin’s biology, and concentration matters. Skin naturally contains high concentrations of vitamin C, where it supports collagen synthesis and contributes antioxidant protection against sun-induced damage.<sup>[8]</sup>
If your vitamin C product stings or flushes your skin, that is information. Work on your barrier first and come back to it.
This thinking is how I developed our Ultimate Cocktail Facial Serum. I wanted natural antioxidants like bilberry, plus hyaluronic acid, which binds water and holds it in the skin. I wanted to work with my skin’s biology rather than cut into it.
Everyone is drinking collagen right now. As a scientist, I went and looked.
The evidence conflicts, and the pattern of who funded what is the interesting part.
Several meta-analyses report benefits. A 2021 review of 19 randomized controlled trials covering 1,125 participants found favorable effects on skin hydration, elasticity, and wrinkles compared with placebo.<sup>[9]</sup> A 2023 meta-analysis of 26 trials and 1,721 patients also found improvements in hydration and elasticity, while explicitly noting several biases in the included trials.<sup>[10]</sup>
Then there is the 2025 systematic review that separated trials by funding source. Across all 23 randomized trials pooled together, collagen supplements improved hydration, elasticity, and wrinkles. But in the subgroup analysis, trials not funded by pharmaceutical companies showed no effect on any of those measures, while industry-funded trials did. High-quality studies showed no significant effect in any category. The authors concluded that there is currently no clinical evidence supporting collagen supplements to prevent or treat skin aging.<sup>[11]</sup>
That is the finding that changed my mind. When the effect disappears in the independently funded, higher-quality studies, that tells you something.
My honest read as a formulator: if you take collagen and you enjoy it, there is no harm in it. Just do not let it replace the things with stronger evidence behind them. And always ask who paid for the study.
Setting collagen powder aside, a few nutritional choices do hold up.
Omega-3 fatty acids are anti-inflammatory and have decades of research behind them. The useful frame is your ratio of omega-3 to omega-6, because most people eating a typical Western diet get far too much omega-6.
For rosacea specifically, the evidence is narrower than the internet suggests. A 2026 meta-analysis of omega-3 supplementation for dry eye disease reported benefit in rosacea-associated dry eye, though the authors noted the evidence was limited and described those findings qualitatively rather than statistically.<sup>[12]</sup> That is a real signal for ocular symptoms. It is not proof that fish oil calms facial redness.
Polyphenols are antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds found in grape skins, leafy greens, and colorful produce. This is the actual reason people say to eat the rainbow.
I used to love red wine. I have cut back to a handful of drinks a year, because the polyphenol benefit is overshadowed by the risks of the alcohol itself. That was not a fun conclusion to reach, and I reached it anyway.
Vitamin C is the cofactor your body needs to build its own collagen.<sup>[8]</sup> I would argue it is more useful than drinking collagen, because it supports the machinery that makes yours.
I have a sweet tooth, so this one is hard.
Sugar creates rigid chemical cross-links between collagen fibers through a process called glycation. Picture tiny welds joining strands that used to slide past each other freely. Cross-linking of matrix proteins like collagen by advanced glycation end products increases tissue stiffness and degrades structural integrity.<sup>[13]</sup> Welded collagen cannot flex, so instead of bouncing back it stiffens and becomes more prone to breaking down.
What you eat really does show up in how your skin functions.
I am not going to tell you to never see the sun. I am a diver. Sunlight also does good things for mood.
I am also clear-eyed about the trade. Significant sun exposure causes DNA damage in skin cells, reduces elasticity over time, and increases hyperpigmentation and freckling. A dermatologist recently told me that a big sun day also temporarily suppresses skin immune function, which reframed how I think about the flight home from a dive trip. Recycled air, a packed cabin, and lowered defenses is a rougher combination than it looks. I am keeping that in mind for my upcoming Red Sea trip.
The strongest evidence in this entire category is about protecting yourself from the sun consistently. In a randomized trial in Nambour, Australia, 903 adults were assigned to daily or discretionary sunscreen use. After four and a half years, the daily sunscreen group showed no detectable increase in skin aging, and 24% less skin aging than the discretionary group. The same trial tested beta-carotene supplements and found no overall effect.<sup>[14]</sup>
One study, two lessons. Consistent sun protection worked. A popular antioxidant supplement did not.
Sun exposure is one of many exposome factors that shape how skin ages, alongside air pollution, tobacco smoke, nutrition, sleep, and psychological stress.<sup>[15]</sup>
If you are in your thirties or forties with sensitive or reactive skin and this approach is new to you, start with three things. Not ten.

Keep the changes small. One per week, not a whole ten-step overhaul. The benefits accumulate over years, even if you are starting at forty.
I am a recovering perfectionist, so I will say the quiet part directly. The routine you actually keep beats the routine you designed and abandoned.
Functional skin aging is an approach that supports what your skin does, including barrier protection, renewal, and repair, instead of trying to erase visible signs of age. Success is measured by how your skin behaves and recovers rather than by how it photographs.
Anti-aging aims to correct or erase the signs of aging. Functional aging aims to support skin function throughout the aging process. The practical difference shows up in product choices, since functional approaches prioritize barrier repair and sun protection over aggressive correction.

Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen has the strongest randomized-trial support for slowing visible skin aging.<sup>[14]</sup> After that, a consistent barrier-supporting routine and avoiding over-treatment.
Being pro-aging is not giving up on your skin or your health. It is caring for your health instead of chasing what your skin looked like at twenty-five, which is not attainable, because your skin cells are not twenty-five.
I want to embrace the years and be grateful for them. The wisdom I have gained over the last two decades made me a better human than I was in my twenties, and I would like to celebrate that rather than apologize for the evidence of it.
The goal of functional skincare is skin that does its job and looks its best at every age. Not rewinding a clock.
